Hitler Painted Roses.

Santa Monica, CA: Earth Books & Gallery, 1966. First edition. 4to. Stapled wrps., unpaginated. Front cover drawing by Richmond, with another glossy print of a drawing by him bound in at the back.

The author’s first book, featuring a 3pp. introduction by his friend, Charles Bukowski: “it is a sweet god damned pleasure to write a foreword to these poems. Yet this foreword, like the poems, is going to bring the enemy out from under the rock. Well, at least we will be able to look at him and vomit”.

Loosely inserted is an ALS from the author on Earth headed notepaper to Marvin Malone, editor of The Wormwood Review: “when Buk offered to do a forward (sic) for me if I would bring HITLER out, I jumped.” Approx. 83 words, together with original envelope addressed to Malone.

Richmond’s work was first published in Wormwood in 1964 and later influenced the poetry of Jim Morrison. His 40-year heroin addiction, funded latterly by a $2 million inheritance, culminated in him living in Santa Monica’s homeless shelter. He finally kicked his habit in 2006, three years before his death.

Near Fine.
