NY: Grove Press, 1967. First edition. 8vo. Blue cloth, with title lettering and decoration in gilt to upper board. Dustwrapper and book design by Dave Haselwood, with author’s photograph to lower panel by filmmaker Jack Smith (Rosenthal appeared in a minor role in “Flaming Creatures” and acted in a more significant role in “Normal Love”).

The book has been described by its French translator, Philippe Aronson, as a bildungsroman about “passion, idealism, incest, drugs, homosexuality, black magic, vegetarianism, style, and the romance of writing.” Its author was a key figure in the publication of “The Naked Lunch”, editor at the Chicago Review and subsequently Big Table magazine (both of which attracted controversy after publishing extracts from Burroughs’s novel), and later he co-founded the Kaliflower commune with Hibiscus in San Francisco.

Slight offsetting to six pages; small lower right corner stain to a few leaves; o/w Very Good in slightly edge-worn dw.
