SOMETHING ELSE PRESS EPHEMERA. A collection of more than 30 ephemeral items produced by the Something Else Press between 1965 and 1972, including Newsletters, Newscards, Catalogues and Gallery announcements.

Most of the items are accompanied by their original printed envelopes, as mailed to Frederic Hunter, bibliophile, historian of journalism and a pioneer of independent radio who worked at the Central Office of Information in Whitehall, London, during the 1960s.

The collection includes:

i) A TLS to Fred Hunter from Barbara Moore, typewritten on Something Else Press stationery, dated March 24, 1965. Approx. 179 words. In it, Moore, who was Something Else’s first ‘Editorial Director’, describes it as “a small, recently formed publishing house dedicated to the so-called unpublishable in avant-garde art, primarily happenings and related art forms” (Moore was succeeded as editor by Emmett Williams and later by Jan Herman). Together with original hand-addressed envelope, accompanied by printed publicity literature for the Press’s first two books, “Jefferson’s Birthday/Postface” by Dick Higgins (who founded the Press in 1964) and Ray Johnson’s “The Paper Snake”. The former consists of the book’s dustwrapper, its verso printing an order form for the title (with the address updated) alongside Higgins’s “Something Else Manifesto” (written before any of his Press’s books were published).

ii) Something Else Newscards #1-6, #8-9 (of nine published during 1965). United States government standard postcard size, all but the first three addressed and mailed in the post to Fred Hunter. Each card announces the forthcoming publication of the Press’s early books and occasional pithy comments about the authors’ activities, one of whom, ‘Camille Gordon’, was Dick Higgins’s alter ego (the series of Newscards was preceded by two similar cards, “Camille’s Reports” #1 and #2). Near Fine.

iii) The Something Else Newsletter Volume 1, #1-2, #4-5, #7-11, and Volume 2, #2 and #4 (NY: February 1966 - September 1972). A broken run of 11 issues, from a total of 19 produced (though the last one, Volume 2, #7, April 1973, was never mailed; and not including the Newsletter’s brief reappearance in 1983). All folded for mailing, as issued, each 4pp.-6pp., most of them together with their original envelopes. All the titled articles are by Dick Higgins, including “Intermedia” in the first issue, a key essay defining the term he coined. Other theoretical essays by Higgins contained in the Newsletters here are “Games of Art”, “Structural Researches”, and “Boredom and Danger”. The last page of the first two issues print Newscards #10 and #11, a continuation of the postcard announcements. The Newsletters also contain information (called “Gabcards”) about new publications, Press authors and friends, some of them reports by alter ego at large ‘Camille Gordon’, ie. Dick Higgins (others, including Marilyn Harris, Judy Padow, Susan Hartung, Ken Friedman and Anne Brazeau also used the pseudonym). Someone else who used it was a photographer for the New York Review of Sex, a friend of Barbara Moore’s who suggested the name to her. In the tenth issue of the Newsletter (November 1969), Higgins, writing as the ‘real’ Camille Gordon, angrily asserts that the imposter is “NOT your Newsletter editor” (he never learnt that it was Moore who gave the photographer her fictitious name). The last Newsletter in the run here (Volume 2, #4) is accompanied by five Something Else cards promoting books by Gertrude Stein, Toby MacLennan, Bern Porter, Dick Higgins, and Wolf Vostell and Dick Higgins (the envelope containing them is addressed to John and Helen Cassidy, co-founders with Fred Hunter of the spoken word record label, Stream Records). Some wear and tear to envelopes, o/w about Near Fine.

iv) Three Something Else Press catalogues (1965-1970): a) What to Look for in a Book - Physically & Catalogue 1965-66. NY: Something Else Press, Inc., nd. (1965). 12mo. Stapled wrps., unpaginated (16pp. incl. wrappers). Illustrated with photographs by Peter Moore. The first Something Else Press catalogue, with a list and descriptions of the first six books from the Press, followed by a brief list of titles due in 1966. Preceded by Higgins’s essay on the art of fine printing and binding. Fine, with original mailing envelope. b) The Arts of the New Mentality: Catalogue 1967-1968. NY: Something Else Press, Inc., nd. (1967). 32mo. Stapled wrps., 48pp. + separate ‘Errata and Addenda’ folded sheet. The third Something Else Press catalogue, including detailed descriptions of Press books to date, along with German, Italian and Spanish imports, out-of-print titles, an index, and Higgins’s essay on the “New Mentality”. Near Fine, with original envelope. c) Tomorrow’s Avant-Garde Today: Catalogue 1970. NY: Something Else Press, 1970. Narrow 8vo. Stapled wrps., unpaginated (16pp.). The eighth and penultimate Something Else Press catalogue, listing recent and forthcoming titles, Great Bear Pamphlets, and announcing the Press’s distribution of Allan Kaprow’s record, “How to Make a Happening”. Slight rusting to staples, o/w Fine, with original envelope.

v) Two Something Else Gallery announcements: a) Wolf Vostell: Dogs and Chinese Not Allowed. NY: The Something Else Gallery, May 1966. Broadsheet, printed in purple on both sides, folded six times (measures 19x13.5cm. when folded, 75x54cm. unfolded). One side lists a selection of titles by the avant-garde publisher Typos Verlag, for which the Something Else Press was “now the exclusive distributor in America”, and the other announces preliminary details and documentation of a dé-coll/age Happening on the New York subway by Wolf Vostell, including artwork, a diagram and text by him. Fine, with mailing envelope. The Something Else Gallery was located on the ground floor at 238 West 22nd Street, the townhouse behind the Chelsea Hotel where Dick Higgins and Alison Knowles lived. b) Wolf Vostell: Technological Oak Tree. West Glover, Vermont: The Something Else Gallery, August 1972. Single sheet folded to make 4pp. (folded twice more for mailing). Illustrated with two photographs, a diagram and two maps. A printed announcement for Wolf Vostell’s installation in Barton, Vermont, and featuring a text, “Vostell’s T.O.T.”, by Dick Higgins. Fine, with original mailing envelope.

An unusually substantial collection of Something Else ephemera, spanning the period from its earliest publications to its relocation to Vermont in 1972 (the Press closed in 1974 following Higgins’s departure in 1973).
