THE BEAT BOOK - Volume 4, 1974, of the unspeakable visions of the individual (California, PA: ed./pub. Arthur & Glee Knight, 1974).

4to. Wrps., 176pp. Profusely illustrated throughout.

Presentation copy to the editors, husband-and-wife duo Arthur and Kit ‘Glee’ Knight, SIGNED by 19 of the contributors (as well as by Arthur Knight), several of whom have added a personal inscription: Allen Ginsberg (a nice, long inscription on the first page); Peter Orlovsky; John Clellon Holmes (three times); Carolyn Cassady; Philip Whalen; William S. Burroughs; Jack Micheline; Gregory Corso; Gary Snyder; Herbert Huncke; Louis Cartwright; Carl Solomon; Lawrence Ferlinghetti; Fernando Pivano (Kerouac’s Italian translator); John Tytell; and photographers John Montgomery, Gerard Malanga, Larry Keenan and Mellon Tytell (twice). The majority of the signatures are undated, but of those that are, the earliest one dates from 1976 and the most recent 1982.

The Unspeakable Visions of the Individual (the title is from Jack Kerouac’s “Belief & Technique for Modern Prose”) ran for 20 issues between 1971 and 1985 (some numbers were issued as booklets or broadsides), and the contents in this volume, the only one published in 1974 and the last until 1977, include interviews with William Burroughs (by Gerard Malanga, incl. 12 photos), John Clellon Holmes and Carl Solomon; poems by Philip Whalen, Peter Orlovsky, Bob Kaufman, Gerard Malanga, Jack Kerouac, Ray Bremser and Lawrence Ferlinghetti; prose by Carl Solomon, Paul Bowles, Michael McClure, Jack Micheline, Neal Cassady, Carolyn Cassady, Diane Di Prima and Herbert Huncke; letters by William Burroughs, Jack Kerouac, Allen Ginsberg and Gary Snyder; artworks by Gregory Corso, Robert LaVigne and Larry Rivers; and numerous b/w photographs, many of them full page, including “An unpublished portfolio from the beat generation” by Fred W. McDarrah (18pp.).

Wrappers rubbed and slightly creased, esp. spine panel (unsurprisingly), o/w a Very Good copy of an excellent Beat anthology featuring an exceptional gathering of Beat Generation signatures.
