A group of eight Arts Lab schedules and cinema programmes, c. January-November 1968, together with Arts Lab notes for programmes of films by Kenneth Anger, Michael Snow, Paul Haines and Jose Soltero, and Wheeler Dixon’s notes for an early animation retrospective.

Twelve duplicated foolscap sheets, all except two printed recto and verso.

The shows listed for the gallery space (run by Pamela Zoline and Biddy Peppin) include an exhibition of work by Takis, an ‘Environment’ by Saleem Bukhari and Dave Robson, and ‘Shades’, John Latham’s roller blinds show; theatre productions (organised by Jim Haynes and/or Jack Henry Moore) include Jan Quackenbush’s ‘Complexions’, Steven Befkoff’s adaptation of Kafka’s ‘In the Penal Settlement’, Heathcote Williams’s first play, ‘The Local Stigmatic’, performances by The People Show, Will Spoor’s Mime Company and The Human Family, and ‘Four Thoughts’, Yoko Ono and John Lennon’s first joint show; music events (organised by Hugh Davies) feature several concerts by the Spontaneous Music Ensemble, John Peel’s regular late Friday night shows throughout August, unspecified tape concerts of modern music, and performances from AMM in September; and poets’ readings included Lily Greenham (‘Experimental, Phonetic and Concrete’) and Courtney Tulloch and Marc Matthews (both in August).

Other events include a series of four lectures in September by a former member of Timothy Leary’s Harvard circle, Dr. Allan Cohen, while the numerous classic, cult and underground films listed in the cinema programmes (run by David Curtis) include parts of ‘Songs’ by Stan Brakhage, Sandy Daley’s ‘The Naked Lunch or Berkeley Bath Brothel’, various films by Michael Snow, Malcolm Le Grice, Mike Kuchar, Piero Heliczer, Wheeler Dixon and Kenneth Anger, the gradual integration of shows run by the London Film-Makers Co-op, plus, in August, the first UK screening of the uncut, two-screens version of Andy Warhol’s ‘Chelsea Girls’.

The extra programme sheets are Wheeler Winston Dixon’s dense notes for the programme of early animation films shown in July (illustrated in London’s Arts Labs, p.68); an annotated chronology of films by Kenneth Anger, issued to accompany September’s Anger programme (see item #19); notes on ‘Wavelength’ to accompany the programme of films by Michael Snow and Joyce Wieland, also in September (with lengthy quote from Steve Reich); and brief notes on new films by Paul Haines and Jose Soltero (by Michael Snow and Soltero respectively).

A rare (broken) run of schedules and programmes, providing details of the Arts Lab’s activities during its first full year and illustrating its breadth and range. Some light wear, overall condition Very Good.

(12 sheets).
