The People Show, Britain’s first experimental theatre company (described by Jeff Nuttall as “underground of the Underground”), began in 1966 when Nuttall, Sid Palmer, John Dod Darling, Laura Gilbert and Mark Long performed at the church hall in Powis Gardens during the first Notting Hill Festival. Shop manager Bob Cobbing subsequently offered the use of the basement at Better Books, giving them a regular venue, and they first performed at the Arts Lab in October 1967 (No. 15, ‘Magic Circle’, with pianist Mel Davis), and continued to stage productions with varying line-ups on numerous occasions right up until July 1970, a few months before the closure of the New Arts Lab.

Old corner pinholes and light handling wear, o/w Very Good plus. Illustrated in London’s Arts Labs, p.32.
