A flyer by Criton Tomazos issued to accompany an exhibition of the artwork from his graphic poem, ‘I Never Said Exactly’, organised by Pamela Zoline and Biddy Peppin at the Arts Lab gallery, November 25th-December 1st (1968).
Foolscap, printed recto only.
Quoted by David Curtis in London’s Arts Labs, Tomazos recalled that “the event I planned was having two possibilities: (a) … possibly a sound and visual poetry [performance] … or (b) to allow an open-ended, more spontaneous and unpremeditated event, letting people who came largely create [it], through negotiating and inter-acting at the space themselves. I remember I circulated a leaflet with a poem-like play on the title ‘I never said exactly’ ”.
The concluding four lines of the flyer state: “this issue pirated by miles of indica fame and tony richardson of granada:aim ! vegetarians ! join the penguin diet ! same” (the mention of film director Tony Richardson probably references the controversial live production of ‘Look Back in Anger’ in 1956, his first and only television work for Granada TV). Tomazos is best known for his collaborations with John Latham, Bruce Lacey and Jeff Nuttall, and for producing two issues of his mimeo magazine, Amaranth.
