34.

A group of thirteen schedules and advertisement flyers for film screenings (which predominate), theatrical events, music concerts, workshops and exhibitions, November 4th, 1969-March 21st, 1971.

Consists of eleven gestetnered foolscap sheets (some stapled), all except two printed recto and verso + four printed flyers advertising film screenings at the New Arts Lab Cinema (one of them recto only).

Films listed in the schedules include a West Coast Programme (Ben Van Meter, Bruce Baillie, Patricia Marx, Jane Belson); a Fluxus Anthology (Yoko Ono, Paul Sharits, John Cale, George Landow); films by Ron Rice, Stan Brakhage, Steve Dwoskin, Carolee Schneemann, Peter Gidal, Malcolm Le Grice, Simon Hartog, Andy Warhol (‘The Shopper’, ‘Lonesome Cowboys’, ‘Bike Boys’), Richard Hamilton, David Larcher, Jeff Keen, Robert Breer, Kurt Kren and Peter Kubelka, plus a programme of “Classic Sci-Fi & Horror Movies” and, on March 21st, 1971, the Blue Film Festival, immediately after which the New Arts Lab closed.

Theatre events listed feature productions by The People Show and Jeff Nuttall; exhibitions include ‘Mapping New Music’ (musical notation), Ian Breakwell and John Hilliard, and an announcement: “Coming in April - J.G. Ballard’s Crashed Cars” (Ballard’s involvement with the New Arts Lab, of which he was a trustee, came about through his friendship with gallery director Pamela Zoline).

The music events listed include performances by Tom Phillips, John Tilbury, Hugh Davies and Anna Lockwood, and Cornelius Cardew and the Scratch Orchestra, and workshops include the Video Unit (Hoppy), the Computer Terminal (John and Dianne Lifton), the Silkscreen Workshop (Judith Clute), the Film-Makers Co-op (Carla Liss and Malcolm Le Grice), and Plastics (Bernard Rhodes, the winner of a Design Council award for a children’s toy he designed using newly developed plastic techniques).

The double-sided flyers advertise Andy Warhol’s ‘Lonesome Cowboys’ (February 1970), a selection of films (April 1970), a Wednesday night series of classics (September 1970), and a single-sided ad. designed by Biddy Peppin for the run of “Classic Sci-Fi & Horror Movies” in February-March, 1971.

The New Arts Lab (aka The Institute for Research in Art & Technology [I.R.A.T.], also Robert Street Arts Lab) was founded in the summer of 1969 by a breakaway group of original Arts Lab members and others, including the London Film-Makers’ Co-op, Pamela Zoline, Hoppy, Biddy Peppin, David Curtis, John Lifton, Fred Drummond and Hugh Davies (as well as Ballard, its trustees included Joe Tilson and Reyner Banham, and its patron was Lord Harlech). It was housed in a former pharmaceutical warehouse made available rent-free by Camden Council in Robert Street, Euston, and, as well as the ground-floor cinema run by Curtis, it included theatre and gallery spaces, the LFMC workshop, and Hoppy’s TVX video research group.
