Police Are Not Police.
Screenprinted poster, printed in black and red on white paper stock. 68.5x45.2cm. Illustrated.
An undated, uncredited diatribe by Heathcote Williams, probably written in the aftermath of the violent police invasion of the Third Windsor Free Festival in August 1974.
It begins: “The People who are called PIGS, and FUZZ, and BETTY WINDSOR’S BOVVER BOYS, are so called because they are not POLICE. They live in a Station, because they have come to a Halt”, and ends: “They only arrest you because they wish to arrest your Development. It is rumoured that since their Abolition by the ALBION FREE STATE DEPARTMENT of ROUGH JUSTICE, many of them have sought greater renumeration in the Peace Corps of the Divine Light Mission.”
Folded three times, o/w Very Good plus. Stamp of Cold Turkey Press publisher Gerard Bellaert to verso. Williams later used the same title in further polemics against police tactics in America.
