Hello, I Love You!
Paris: Jean Lafitte Editions in association with Joy Publishing, Amsterdam, 1974. First edition. 4to. Staplebound wrps,. 148pp. Cover illustration by Willem. One of c. 900 copies duplicated by Haynes for distribution “primarily to our contributors and friends” (copies were also sold on the streets of Paris by him).
This copy has been SIGNED and inscribed by Jim Haynes to former Suck/Joy Publishing co-founders Bill Levy and Susan Janssen: “For Bill and Susan - I hope you both find much in this you like… With best regards, Love, Jim”, dated by him “15 VII ‘74”.
The book was rejected by three New York publishing houses (Lyle Stuart, David Outerbridge and Praeger), so Haynes created the fictitious imprint of Jean Lafitte Editions, named after an 18th century pirate who operated off the coast of Louisiana (Haynes was born in Haynesville, Louisiana). He dedicated his book (presumably titled after The Doors song) to “Universal Peace, Love and Understanding”, and to Wilhelm Reich “and all our sisters & brothers & friends & lovers”.
Its contributors include Betty Dodson; Germaine Greer; Jean-Jacques Lebel; Tuli Kupferberg; Heathcote Williams; Carolee Schneemann; Jefferson Clitlick; Suzanne Brøgger; Michael Zwerin; Adrian Mitchell; Eugene Schoenfeld; Xaviera Hollander; Rufus Collins; Margo St. James; the editors; and many others, each of them providing an original or reprinted interview, statement or text related to sex and/or their own sexual experiences.
The book's intention, Haynes notes on the back cover, was “to demonstrate the infinite joy awaiting all those prepared to liberate themselves”, while for Pasle-Green it was “an attempt… to communicate with you through the most important of all media - our lives!” (Pasle-Green, a poet who had earlier written a Broadway comedy about a family of nudists, later became a counsellor for Community Sex Information and Education Service in New York).
Wrappers noticeably and unevenly tanned; lower right corner creasing; o/w Very Good.
