Two large board mounted publicity photographs of Richard Neville, taken in the Oz office on Princedale Road, Notting Hill, with captions to lower right corners stating “Richard Neville author of Play Power”.
Photographer unknown (possibly Joe Stevens or David Nutter). Measurements 26x37.5cm. + 37.6x24.5cm. Both prints mounted on 2mm. board.
The photographs’ origins are unclear, but Richard Adams suggests that they probably date from autumn 1970 and may have been publicity shots commissioned by Sonny Mehta of Paladin, who published the first paperback edition of ‘Play Power’ in February 1971. The landscape shot of Neville looking to the camera was the basis for Adams’ illustration of Neville dressed in school uniform that was used for the cover of the second paperback reprint, issued shortly after the trial (Neville apparently disliked the original edition's Isle of Wight Festival cover).
The mid-length crochet waistcoat he’s seen wearing appears in other photographs of him from the period, one of them taken by Ron Reid at an Oz demo in Hyde Park (July 4th, 1971), and others (with shorn hair) taken after his release on bail from Wormwood Scrubs just over a month later.
The prints surfaced recently from someone who worked for Friends of Oz, and both show a little corner and edge-wear, but have otherwise stood the test of time well.
