London: Bloomsbury Press, 1995. First edition. 376pp. + 24pp. photo-illustrated, including 8pp. in colour. Colour endpapers reproduce 29 early Oz covers; chapter headings illustrated with drawings by Martin Sharp. Dustwrapper design features a collage of Oz front covers.

SIGNED and inscribed by the author on the title page: “Dear Richard - Letters like yours make writing worthwhile - Hot regards Richard Neville May 1996 PS ‘Out of My Mind’ is out in May…” (an anthology of the author’s essays and articles). Errata slip present (it makes apologetic reference to Germaine Greer’s misrepresented gynaecological history on p.71, to which Neville has added the comment “Phoooeey!!” in black ink; after Greer was sent the original manuscript by Neville she replied: “I shall not read it. Ever.”).

Small indentations to lower board, o/w Near Fine in Fine dw. The first edition was quickly reprinted.

Together with:

i) an original colour poster issued to promote the book reproducing four Oz magazine front covers. 59.5x42cm. Fine;

ii) a pre-publication extract from the book (7pp.), published in The Independent Magazine (April 29th, 1995), with front cover photograph of Richard Neville and Martin Sharp by Bob Whitaker. Includes Schoolkids issue contributor Peter Popham’s recollections, plus photographs, including a spectacular full-page colour group portrait by Whitaker of the original Australian staff, taken at Sharp’s home in Sydney in 1995. The picture shows Andrew Fisher, Jenny Kee, Martin Sharp, Albie Thoms, Richard Neville, Jim Anderson, Louise Ferrier and Richard Walsh, each brandishing an issue of Oz, surrounded by a dazzling array of Sharp’s psychedelic artworks, with more issues of Oz in the foreground, amongst numerous examples from Sharp’s collection of sacred figurines, from Mickey Mouse and Mary Magdalen to Donald Duck and Jiminy Cricket.
