The Soft Machine.

Paris: Olympia Press, 1961. First edition. Wrps. No. 88 in the Traveller’s Companion Series. Dustwrapper reproduces a calligraphic drawing by Brion Gysin.

SIGNED and inscribed by the author on the title page: “For James Morris all the best William Burroughs”.

The first in the trilogy of Burroughs’ cut-up novels (it was launched in June 1961 with a party at the Librairie Anglaise in Paris, though Burroughs was staying at the Villa Muniria in Tangier at the time). Allen Ginsberg helped edit the original manuscript and provides an unattributed blurb printed on the dw. flap in which he explains the cut-up method: “in the hands of a master, the Cut-Up technique produces scenes of inhuman beauty and vast eocene nostalgia.”

Price cancel, with ‘New Price NF 18’ stamped over the original price on the lower wrapper (the Franc was revalued in January 1960). Near Fine in Very Good plus dw. (slight rubbing to extremities).
