Original exhibition announcement for ‘Meat Show: an environment’, held at the Washington Meat Market, New York City, October 23-25 (1964).
Small poster, with hand-drawn lettering printed in black on white stock. 39x58cm. Illustrated with a drawing of a bone-like structure and a small photograph of a woman undergoing a dental operation (an invite flyer reproduced the same design).
‘Meat Show’ was an installation of raw meat in a large refrigerator unit separated into chambers by lingerie fabric. Before the show Brown stated: “I am attempting to bring religion, sex and art into the same vital relationship that existed prior to the degenerative plague that Jesus Christ, Mohammed, Moses, Gautama Buddha, and Lao-Tse visited upon humanity. The Meat Show will induce startling spiritual, sexual, and aesthetic revelations in the viewer.” Attendees, who arrived in limousines, wore their overcoats to view the exhibition, which was kept at 3 degrees centigrade.
Earlier in the year, Brown, one of the originators of Happenings, founded the First National Church of the Exquisite Panic, Inc., and this show doubled as its First Grand Opening.
Almost forty years later the event was referenced by Marilyn Manson in his song, “The Bright Young Things” (I’m most monster with my groan box in the ‘Meat Show’).
