America and the Arts. Programme brochure for the fourth Fine Arts Festival 1960.
Carbondale, IL: Southern Illinois University, School of Fine Arts, January 31-February 19, 1960. Plastic comb-bound printed card wrappers. 16mo. Illustrated. Sixteen different colour paper sheets of different sizes, most printed recto and verso, arranged directory-style with cascading calendar of events.
The entry for February 3 lists piano accompaniment by John Cage and David Tudor for a Merce Cunningham and Company dance concert. The programme featured works by Morton Feldman and Christian Wolff, composers Cage had first met ten years earlier, both of whom became close associates and fellow members of the New York School.
Other festival events included a lecture and film showing by the (now largely forgotten) experimental filmmaker, Francis Thompson (February 10); a concert of work and a lecture by the (almost equally forgotten) German-born American composer, Ingolf Dahl (February 12-13); and a J.J. Johnson Jazz Quintet concert, featuring Cedar Walton on piano (February 15).
