A wide-ranging survey of film experimentation, one of the first to be published in Britain, beginning with the European avant-garde in the first part of the twentieth century and continuing to the New American cinema films of Stan Brakhage, Gregory Markopoulos, Ron Rice, Andy Warhol and others in the 1960s (Curtis, who ran the Arts Lab cinema, began his research with visits to America in 1969 and the book’s main focus is on the American contribution). The final section looks at the co-operative movement, “minimal movies and anti-aesthetic sex”, and structural cinema. Includes a bibliography.
