An original handbill announcing The Living Theatre’s first production of “The Connection”, “a play with jazz by Jack Gelber featuring the Freddie Redd Quartet with Jackie McLean” (New York: 1959).

Printed offset in red and black on white stock. 28x21.8cm.

The production, directed by Judith Malina and designed by Julian Beck, starred Warren Finnerty as ‘Leach’, a role for which he was given an Obie Award (he also played the same character in the film version and later appeared in “Easy Rider”). It also included a young Martin Sheen as an uncredited ‘man in the audience’. It opened on June 23, 1959 in repertory with “Many Loves” by William Carlos Williams, the first play to be staged by The Living Theatre at their new Playhouse at Sixth Avenue and 14th Street.
