An original flyer announcing The Birthday Party with special guest Lydia Lunch at the Roxy (West Hollywood), March 30 (1983).
Printed in black on pink paper. 21.5x28cm. Illustrated with a woodcut of a religious figure.
The Birthday Party’s first (and only) LA gig featured two shows, one at 9pm and one at 11pm, and both were opened by Lydia Lunch, accompanied by Jim Sclavunos on keyboards and sax.
In her concert review for the Los Angeles Times, Kristine McKenna wrote: “In revolt against that insipid, dulling tranquilizer called ‘show biz’, the Birthday Party is not entertainment. It is a force of nature, a necessary evil and a glorious mess”, adding that Lydia Lunch “once again achieved the nails-on-the-blackboard effect on which she’s built a career which, while courageous in its independence, is too abrasive to function successfully in the pop world.”
The Birthday Party played their final show in Melbourne less than three months later and disbanded shortly afterwards.
Fine.
