In The Gutter.
London: Quartet, 1978. First edition. 4to. Wrps. (no hardcover issued), 96pp.
A contemporary photo-documentary on punk fashion and its relationship to ‘primitive’ dress by a Fleet Street journalist (Hennessy had recently made a TV programme titled “Punk and Acne Go Together”).
Includes photographs (some in colour) of the Bromley contingent, the Vibrators, the Damned, Cherry Vanilla, Johnny Rotten, Soo Catwoman, and others, and numerous street shots of punks.
The text also includes interviews with “Mark P, punk prophet and one-time editor of the fanzine Sniffin Glue”, his “pal” Danny (Baker), as well as Don Letts: “The reggae thing and the punk thing, it’s the same thing. We’re just regular kids. It’s the street culture, the black version and the white version. We’re angry people. We want change, we want opportunities. Something’s gotta happen.”
Very Good plus.
