Item #40750 Talking Heads '77. TALKING HEADS.

Talking Heads '77.

(NY): Sire Records, 1977. Original US promotional poster for Talking Heads’ debut album. 89x59.8cm. Design by Ronn Spencer; photograph by Mick Rock.

Talking Heads signed to Sire Records in November 1976, partly on the recommendation of Danny Fields, and their first studio LP was released on September 16 in the following year. It was subsequently voted the year’s seventh best album in The Village Voice’s Pazz & Jop critics’ poll.

Ronn Spencer’s poster promoting it features David Byrne’s front cover design for the album positioned at jaunty angles on a grid of rectangular green blocks, each one with a strip printing the title below, while two of them reproduce Mick Rock’s colour photograph of the band from the sleeve’s back cover. The design recalls the serial imagery of Andy Warhol, an artist that Spencer, then an 18-year-old student at the Rhode Island School of Design, photographed in 1966 (a few years later, David Byrne, Tina Weymouth and Chris Frantz all attended the same art and design school).

Original, unobtrusive machine folds, with tiny, old top corner pinholes, now conservation linen-backed and spectacular.
