Inspired by John Cage’s book, “Notations” (published by Something Else Press in 1969), Sauer’s anthology of visual and graphic scores includes work by established composers of new music (among them, Robert Ashley, Cathy Berberian, Earle Brown, John Cage, Philip Corner, Barry Guy, Joan La Barbara, Gordon Mumma, Pauline Oliveros, Karlheinz Stockhausen and James Tenney), as well as new and emerging composers, most of whom participated in the project by providing her with accompanying written statements elucidating their creative processes.
Sauer, a musicologist, curator and composer herself, adds biographical sketches for each of the 165 contributors (16pp.), and an index.
