Six Auerhahn Poets Reading New Works.
A small broadside announcing a joint reading by Allen Ginsberg, Philip Whalen, Michael McClure, Andrew Hoyem, David Meltzer and Lew Welch at the International Music Hall, San Francisco, November 26, 1963. 22x25.5cm. Printed letterpress in black on cream coloured textured paper. Decorated with illustrations of a wood grouse (this copy has them hand-coloured in green, yellow and brown watercolour paints).
The reading (held next door to the Batman Gallery) took place just four days after the assassination of John F. Kennedy, news of which was announced to Allen Ginsberg by Neal Cassady, his roommate at 1403 Gough Street. The following day Ginsberg wrote “Nov. 23, 1963: Alone”, likely read by him at the reading.
Ralph Gleason filed a column for the San Francisco Chronicle that was published on the day of the reading (“A Chance to Meet the Poet Ginsberg”), and years later another of the six poets, David Meltzer, recalled that “There were some benefit readings for Auerhahn which took on the import of landmark events.”
