Ginsberg recited the poem with guitar backing in 1971 when he opened the John Sinclair Freedom Rally, after which John Lennon suggested that he should “treat it like ‘Eleanor Rigby’ with a string quartet.” Twelve years later, backed by the Mondriaan Quartet, Ginsberg used the recording equipment at the Melkweg in Amsterdam to record the arrangement for Benn Posset’s One World Poetry project. The other side features Niew Hip Stilen by the Mondriaan Quartet.
