Influenced initially by his close relationship with Andy Warhol, John Giorno first applied the Pop Art technique of found imagery to his poetry, then extended his interest to the use of tape recorders for poetry and sound pieces after meeting Brion Gysin and William Burroughs. Giorno met them at various New York parties in early 1965, including Panna Grady’s at the Dakota, and soon began recording with Gysin at the Hotel Chelsea and Burroughs at his Centre Street loft apartment.

Later in the year he established his most famous work, Giorno Poetry Systems, “a small business as a work of art”, and in 1969 he organised the first Dial-A-Poem event, a project for which Burroughs contributed recordings. In November 1971 Giorno recorded Burroughs at home in Duke Street, St. James’s, London, “his sad lonely voice reading from The Wild Boys”, as he later wrote (the recording was included as the third track on his debut Dial-A-Poem Poets album in 1972). Giorno also helped produce the Nova Convention in 1978, a 3-day tribute to Burroughs featuring, among others, Patti Smith, Frank Zappa, and a then largely unknown Laurie Anderson.
