74.
A group of five colour photographs by William Burroughs taken in flat 22, 8 Duke Street, St. James’s, two of them featuring portraits of John Brady and three of them an unidentified friend (1973).
Square format (10.1x9.8cm.). Vintage prints.
In the first photograph John Brady is pictured posing in front of a painting by Brion Gysin, and in the second he is seen standing outside by the fire escape at the rear of the building.
The anonymous friend is portrayed in the flat’s living room, next to Burroughs’ bed. In one of the three snaps he is seen holding up a large collage, with a folded newspaper and collage material visible at the foot of the bed and a large framed oil painting of the Sahara by Brion Gysin hanging on the wall behind him. The photograph of him seated on a chair next to the bed is illustrated in Taking Shots: The Photography of William Burroughs (p.110).
Fine.
