Meet The Beats.
A complete set of 3 posters featuring Robert Crumb’s portraits of Jack Kerouac, William Burroughs and Allen Ginsberg. Sudbury, MA: Water Row Press, 1985. First edition. Limited to 100 numbered copies each. Printed in black on cream coloured paper by the Tabula Rasa Press. Each poster measures 45.5x30.5cm.
Though not called for, all three posters have been SIGNED in black ink by Crumb, and, additionally, by William Burroughs and Allen Ginsberg on their respective posters, the former in pencil, the latter in blue ink.
Faint creasing to all three; slight offsetting along one edge of the Kerouac and Burroughs posters; three very small splash marks to Kerouac poster; tiny marks to Burroughs poster; old pinhole marks to centre lower edge of Burroughs and Ginsberg posters. Overall, a Very Good set, with most of the condition issues easily lost through framing.
Water Row commissioned Crumb to draw the portraits and later reprinted the posters in unnumbered editions (the first issue of the numbered Ginsberg poster misspelt his first name and was withdrawn).
Crumb was first turned on to the significance of the Beat writers during his teenage years by his friend, Marty Pahls. Decades later he told a radio show in Australia that they “were heroes, all those people from the Beatnik-hipster era, you know, they were our antecedents.”
No record can be found of another complete set signed by Crumb, Burroughs and Ginsberg.
