185.
A group of three b/w photographs of Lawrence Ferlinghetti reclining on a couch, Paris, June 1965 (precise date and location unknown).
Photographer’s stamps and his brief ink captions to versos of each. Sizes vary: 15.2x23.3cm.; 14.3x22cm.; 19.5x26.7cm.
The second of the three images is included on page 55 in Chapman’s book, “Beats à Paris: Paris und die Dichter der Beatgeneration, 1957-1963” (item #144), with the following caption by him: “I had great difficulty focusing this shot. The night before, I had stumbled across the sale of a prostitute taking place between two pimps in a dark side street. I was attacked by one of them who ripped my shirt and smashed my glasses, kicking me and screaming obscenities. The other pimp saved me by holding him off.”
The photographs were probably taken not long after Ferlinghetti’s participation in the 2nd Festival of Free Expression at the Centre Americains des Artistes, 261 Boulevard Raspail.
Slight crease to lower right corner of third print, o/w Near Fine.
