SIGNED and inscribed by Jess on the front free endpaper: “For Ida with all my love Jess”.
The recipient, Bay Area poet Ida Hodes, was a close friend of Jess and Duncan, as well as secretary for The Poetry Center (Duncan was assistant director) and a member of the Maidens, an informal group that included Jess, Duncan, Helen Adam, James Broughton, Madeline Gleason and Eve Triem, who met at each other’s houses for costumed dinner parties where they recited poetry and performed plays created for the group. Jess’s painting, “Fig. 3, Ida, Duncan, and I: Translation #18”, hangs in the Pennyslvania Academy of the Fine Arts.
