The Spagyric Eye.
From the library of Shirley Berman, and SIGNED by Dean Stockwell with his initials on the half title page.
Ranchos de Taos, New Mexico: R.B. Ravens Gallery, 2004. First edition. Sm. folio. Illustrated laminated boards. 96pp., including 42 full-page colour reproductions.
Published to accompany the exhibition in Taos that ran between September 3-October 31, 2004.
Stockwell dedicated his exhibition “to the memory of Pantale Xantos” (Wallace Berman), who he first met in 1955 (Stockwell designed the cover for Semina 8), and under whose guidance he developed his second path as an artist in parallel with his primary career as a Hollywood actor.
In “Semina Culture” Kristine McKenna wrote that the “series of collages titled The Spagyric Eye (spagyric refers to a form of plant alchemy)… are very much in keeping with Stockwell’s Surrealist-inspired art of the 1950s”, and revolve “around variations on two central images - an abandoned house and a human eye.”
The book also prints introductory texts by, among others, Walter Hopps, Dennis Hopper, George Herms, and Stockwell’s friend, Neil Young (an unproduced screenplay co-written by Stockwell inspired Young’s “After the Gold Rush”).
Boards lightly rubbed, o/w Fine.
