HORDE 1 (all published). London: December 1964.

Stapled wrps., 50pp. Mimeograph. Edited by Johnny Byrne, Lee Harwood, Roger Jones, and Barry Miles. The editorial address for the submission of manuscripts is stated as 64 Abbey Road, the famous writers’ house run by Miss Linsley, then shared by Johnny Byrne, Roger Jones and Thom Keyes, among others.

Front cover designed by Miles, who has identified Spike Hawkins in the photograph by writing the poet’s name and drawing a small arrow in blue ink pointing to him. He has also SIGNED the title page, adding that it was “The only issue”.

Horde was issued as a sequel to Night Train, itself a sequel to Bean Train and Night Scene in the succession of one-shot Beat poetry magazines that coalesced around Lee Harwood, Johnny Byrne and Spike Hawkins. Along with these three poets, other contributors include George Dowden; Michael Horovitz; Dave Cunliffe; Angus MacLise (“Year Away”); Miles; Neil Oram; Penelope Shuttle; Rochelle Owens; Anselm Hollo; Kirby Congdon; Mal Dean (a fold-out centre insert); and Pete Brown and Libby Houston, who, together with Dean, are noted as “now working on a series of ‘goings-on’ (free experiments in jazz, poetry, drama, etc.) at the Mercury Theatre, Notting Hill Gate”. An announcement for the projected second issue, to be guest-edited by Anselm Hollo, appears in red ink at the back.

Staples slightly rusty, o/w Very Good plus. Loosely inserted is an announcement flyer listing Horde’s contributors and its intended publication date, October 1964 (it also lists the contributors to the unrealised second issue, among them Charles Olson, Allen Ginsberg, Piero Heliczer, LeRoi Jones, and Tom Raworth).
