Ginsberg’s reading, which coincided with his 39th birthday, was followed by a surprise party later that night, organised by Barbara Rubin. Held in the basement flat at 72 Chester Square, Belgravia that belonged to a friend of Kate Heliczer, it was attended by, among others, Miles, Ian Sommerville, Criton Tomazos and, briefly, John Lennon and George Harrison, two guests Ginsberg was keen to see again after first meeting them at Bob Dylan’s suite at the Savoy less than a month before.
