48.

A b/w photograph of James Brown in the Ready Steady Go! TV studio, Wembley, March 11, 1966.

The picture was taken immediately after his performance and shows members of the audience applauding him, among them, almost hidden in the shadows, Peter Asher and Barry Miles. Printed later. 20.2x30.5cm.

The entire show was devoted to James Brown, introducing him to the British TV audience and preceding his first UK concert the following day at the Granada Cinema in Walthamstow. The RSG audience, whose members were routinely scouted by production assistants in clubs and discotheques, were joined on this occasion by the co-founders of Indica, London’s hippest new gallery and bookshop, who are just visible in the upper left corner (both, in their own way, an “Everywhere Man”, per the title of a new documentary film on Peter Asher).

Fine. Accompanied by a small notelet with Miles’s holograph caption in pencil.
